FirstServe, a CA non-profit corporation, identifies and helps the lonely and vulnerable—particularly the elderly, the grieving, the developmentally disadvantaged and those not native to the USA.
FirstServe utilizes community resources and provides care through individual counseling, small group support, volunteer training, and opportunities for arts enrichment and cross-cultural understanding.
FirstServe contributes to the growth of the South Bay as a place of hospitality for all.
Programs of FirstServe:
First Friends: First Friends is a fellowship group for adults with special needs which gathers for social time, games, crafts, dinner and worship.

English as a Learned Language (ELL): English as a Learned Language classes are for all skill levels. Participants are invited to arrive around 8:30am for informal conversation. Formal classes begin at 9am. Students may enroll at any class. Tutors are needed to help students practice English conversation. For more information or to volunteer as a tutor, contact Tina Olson.

Cancer Support Group: A faith-based support group for cancer patients, survivors, and families has begun. Each session will include devotions, medical information, time for sharing and will always be open to new members.

Monday Night Meals: First Lutheran’s long time cooperation with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Gardena to serve meals for homeless and under-employed neighbors is linked with FirstServe. Monday Night Meals serves a growing number of adults and children each week.

Elder Support: Ministry with the elderly is an important emphasis for both First Lutheran and FirstServe. FirstServe has expanded its cooperation with local services for the elderly, and its ability to guide individuals and families to agencies and sources of important information.

Mourner’s Path: Walking the Mourner’s Path ® is a support program for persons dealing with bereavement. This FirstServe program began its work in 2008. The Rev. Dr. Bill Hurst is the Program Associate, trained in this innovative faith-centered grief relief program during his years in New York serving grieving people in the aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster.

Events & Publications: Broadway at First, a night of song and laughter led by members and friends of FirstServe will return for another night of joy and celebration in November 2009.

Dental Services: FirstServe Community Services of the South Bay in conjunction with Island Dental of Torrance, to provide free basic dental services to those who cannot afford it. These services will be provided by Dr. Chip Houske one Friday morning per month.
